Handmade in Mt Eden

Every piece of HerbertandWilks jewellery is hand-sculpted, cast, and finished by Sally in her Mt Eden studio. By choosing handmade, you are supporting local craftsmanship and receiving a piece that carries the subtle, unique marks of the maker's hand—ensuring no two pieces are ever exactly the same.

Jewellery Care Guide

Sterling Silver: Gently polish with a soft jewellery cloth to maintain shine. Silver Care Guide →

Solid Gold (9ct, 14ct, 18ct): Solid gold will not tarnish or peel, but it can gather oils and dust. Soak in warm water with a drop of mild dish soap, then gently scrub with a soft toothbrush to restore its brilliance.

18ct Gold Plate: Avoid water, perfumes, and lotions to preserve the gold layer. Gold Plate Care Guide →

Bronze: Over time, bronze develops a unique vintage patina. Polish to restore brightness or leave to age naturally. Bronze Care Guide →

Gemstones: Clean with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals or ultrasonic cleaners.

The Open Ring Workshop is a relaxed 2.5-hour silver jewellery class in Mt Eden, Auckland, where you'll hand-forge an open ring that fits perfectly — no experience required.

The rings shown are examples of what's possible — come with your own design in mind, or choose from one of Sally's patterns on the day.

Step behind the bench and discover what it feels like to make something real.
In this small-group jewellery class (maximum 2 people — so it's essentially a private studio experience), you'll craft your own sterling silver ring from start to finish — designing your pattern, sawing and drilling the metal, adding texture, and forming a ring made perfectly for your finger.

Make, shape, and take home your own piece of silver — right here in Mt Eden, Auckland.

No experience is needed. You'll be guided through each stage at your own pace, with 1-on-1 attention throughout.

What You'll Do

  • Design your own ring pattern — or choose from one of Sally's existing designs
  • Learn to use a jeweller's saw and drill to cut and pierce your silver strip (no snips or shears — proper bench technique from the start)
  • File and smooth the ends for comfort and a clean finish
  • Add texture using hammers or patterned tools — choose from organic hammered finishes, bold sculptural marks, or a smooth look
  • Wrap and form the ring around a mandrel
  • Finish with sanding and polishing — and add the 925 hallmark stamp if there's space for it

You'll leave with a finished ring — a solid, wearable piece that looks handmade because it is.

Who It's For

  • Couples looking for a creative date night in Auckland — something to make together and keep
  • Anyone curious about metalwork or silversmithing
  • Friends or families wanting a shared hands-on experience
  • Gift-seekers wanting something more meaningful than another voucher

Every ring looks a little different, because every maker brings their own touch.

What's Included

  • All materials and tools provided (sterling silver, consumables, safety gear)
  • 2.5-hour session at my Mt Eden studio in Auckland
  • Maximum 2 people — genuine 1-on-1 tuition, not a crowded class
  • Tea, coffee, and time to enjoy the process

Private or one-on-one sessions are also available — please get in touch for pricing and scheduling.

Your finished ring will be ready to wear the same day.

Cancellation & Class Policy

Sometimes plans change — we get it.
If you're unable to make your workshop, please get in touch as soon as possible, and we'll do our best to move you to another date.

Because each session is small and materials are prepared ahead of time, refunds aren't available, but we're happy to transfer your booking if you give at least 2 days' notice.
This gives us a chance to offer your spot to someone else.

If something comes up at the last minute, you're welcome to gift your place to a friend or flick us an email — we sometimes have people on standby who'd love to join.

If a class needs to be cancelled or postponed from our end, you'll be offered a full refund or credit to use for a future workshop.

To rearrange or transfer your booking, email: sally.h@herbertandwilks.co.nz
